What do you do at Legacy Hilo?
Aloha, my name is Cortnie, I’m an Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Legacy Hilo.
How did you get interested in the healthcare field?
If you ask me what inspired me to become a nurse, I don’t think I would have just one moment or one person that has inspired me. I think many people play a role in your career in your life and for me it was more of a calling, and I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life—I wanted to help people. I pour my heart out there and care for each person in a moment that they truly need someone.
What advice would you have for others interested in a career with Legacy Hilo or the healthcare field?
If I had to give advice to anybody that’s going into the profession, I would have to say just do it with your heart, that’s going to be the best thing for you. Don’t worry about the “how” you’re going to do it, or financially, or if it’s going to be the best thing. I would say, your heart at the end of the day will lead you in the right direction because you’re dealing with people in the most vulnerable state—you just want to give them the best love and compassion that you can possibly can.
What does Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month mean to me?
I think it’s important for us to recognize the heritage like AAPI month because we live in Hawaiʻi. It’s full of different cultures of different religions; just a bunch of ‘ohana—bringing together and truly learning where different people come from and what they’re made of and how they build through things.
Who or what influenced you to be the person that you are today?
Everybody has supported and love me through every single moment and every single chapter of my life made an important role today, where I am today, and I think they all deserve a piece of appreciation.
