Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Strong: Day One Lessons Behind the Scenes

Legacy Hilo Care Team worked closely together to ensure the safety of their residents while operating on backup generators.

As Hawaiʻi Island continues to recover from Tropical Storm Lala, our Care Team was reminded of how important preparation, communication, flexibility, and teamwork are in keeping our residents, families, and staff safe.

Transportation services were closed during Tropical Storm Lala, but American Medical Response remained operational and was able to transport our residents for us.

During the storm, several challenges required quick action. Dialysis centers closed with little notice, requiring our team to reschedule treatments and coordinate with providers. Transportation services were also limited, making a reliable backup plan essential. Thankfully, American Medical Response Team remained available to help when other options were not.

Power outages were another concern, especially in rural areas. Because staff prepared essential equipment for emergency outlets the night before, systems were ready when the power went out, allowing staff to focus less on troubleshooting and more on our residents.

We also planned ahead for shift changes. With severe weather expected during a shift transition, staff were asked to begin earlier and arrive safely before conditions worsened. This proactive approach helped prevent storm-related callouts.

These experiences reinforced an important lesson: resilience starts before the storm. By anticipating challenges, communicating clearly, and having backup plans in place, we can respond with confidence when conditions change.
